A Devaronian conman entered a dim-witted Shikitari insectoid with the unlikely name of Carl into the Rattataki gladiatorial games. The Shikitari are rare subsentient aliens found on a lush jungle world of the same name in the Unknown Regions. Very few know of them, and fewer still could be counted experts on their unique physiology. The multi-stage life cycle of the Shikitari factored into the conman's scam.

Shikitari are born in egg clusters suspended in a poisonous protective gel to ward away predators. As they hatch, the developing pupae fuse to one another, growing into a combined single lifeform. Individual Shikitari grow specialized body parts to become eyes, mouths, feelers, and so on. Shikitari pupae grow in a body style that mimics their guardian -- in the case of Shikitari that are raised by humanoids, they adopt that similar morphology.

Carl was a collection of pupae, perfectly suited for gladiatorial combat. However, this stage of his life cycle was extremely short, lasting only two standard days. The Devaronian had pocketed a sizable price for Carl, snickering to himself that in two days, his buyer would be the proud owner of a hardened chrysalis from which would emerge 12 harmless flutterscouts.
