Seen hovering alongside Imperial desert stormtrooper patrols in the dusty corridors of Mos Eisley were these small, sleek probe droids. They are carried by miniature repulsorlifts and their bulbous bodies are packed with sophisticated sensor technology.

The Imperial Mark IV Sentry Droid has fairly rudimentary personality programming, with self-preservation instincts that can easily be overridden by commands. This makes the droid useful in dangerous missions, where it can be sent in ahead of troops suspecting an ambush, or dispatched to map an area of hazardous terrain.

When the droid detected illegal signals from newly installed comm repeaters, Face began harassing an asp worker droid installing the broadcast gear. The asp swatted Face out of the air with a steel-clad fist.

The new probe droids added to the Special Edition of A New Hope were entirely computer-generated creations. They find their roots in some of the earliest draft scripts of Star Wars, which describe globe-like seeker droids.
