The clone troopers that stormed the world of Geonosis during the first battle of the Clone Wars were fully supported by air and ground vehicles. Piloting the Republic attack gunships were specially trained clone trooper pilots. Their uniforms bore yellow markings and specialized helmets.

The standardized accelerated training undergone by the clone trooper ranks is modular, and distinct units can be supplemented or augmented with military specialties. Some clone trooper pilot units are better trained to handle certain vehicles. The CT 5-series of pilots are generally recognized to be the best trained to handle the Jadthu-class landing ships.

However, since each clone was of the same size, this gear could be easily swapped between units should the starfighter rosters change due to mission needs or attrition.

The clone trooper pilot helmets seen in Attack of the Clones were developed relatively late in production through concept sketches based on AT-AT driver and TIE pilot designs. Those worn by the starfighter pilots in Episode III more closely resembled the TIE pilots. The open-faced helmets and costumes were computer-generated, mapped over the real photographic element of actor Temuera Morrison's head.
